Few people get the chance to live in Windsor Castle and the surrounding grounds – where Harry and Meghan’s house Frogmore Cottage is found – but the successful applicant for the role of Housekeeping Assistant for the Queen will. Her Majesty is looking for someone to join the team in charge of the daily running of Windsor Castle, with the duties to ‘upkeep, clean and care for a wide range of interiors and items, ensuring they’re presented to their very best.’
The job is advertised on The Royal Household website and states a competitive salary plus benefits with 15% pension contribution. The role also offers the chance to ‘live in’, the aforementioned opportunity to pretend you’re part of the royal family as you take a weekend stroll around the Windsor estate and pop in to see your neighbours and their adorable eight-month-old son.
Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. The castle was established by William the Conqueror (r.1066-1087) who began building at Windsor around 1070. It took 16 years to complete. It is an official residence of Her Majesty The Queen and is still very much a working royal palace today, home to around 150 people. The Queen spends most of her private weekends at Windsor Castle and takes up official residence for a month in the spring for Easter Court, and for a week each June, when she attends Royal Ascot and the service of the Order of the Garter.
For those looking to stay in London, there is also an Assistant Housekeeper for Buckingham Palace being advertised, however accommodation isn’t mentioned so alas, no chance to live alongside the Queen at her main residence.
