In this week’s episode of Conversations with The Calico Club Maria Speake, founder of Retrouvius, will discuss how to decorate using salvaged materials. Maria will focus on a house she designed in west London which is a fantastic showcase for using reclaimed timbers and textiles in an elegant, thoughtful way.
Maria, who was named House & Garden’s interior designer of the year in 2019, has long set the pace for sustainable design with her judicious and creative use of materials. She and her husband, Adam Hills founded the architectural salvage company Retrouvius in 1993 and have been creating inventive, beautifully crafted rooms ever since.
From rescuing 2,000-square-metres of beautiful Hopton Wood fossil limestone from Heathrow Terminal 2, to buying up the Victorian mahogany cupboards that were once storage for the Victoria and Albert Museum’s textile collection, their work is conscientious without ever being sanctimonious.
Conversations with The Calico Club promises lively and thoughtful discussions that will bring the pages of the magazine to life. The talks are hosted by Emily Tobin and broadcast at the same time each week but if you’re unable to watch live then register via the link anyway as you will be sent a video of the recording to watch at a time that suits you.
Maria’s talk will be broadcast at 6pm BST on Wednesday 3 June (1pm EST). Tickets cost £10 including a booking fee. To register to watch click here.
